The political science department at York State College was previously led autocratically by a department chair who tightly controlled all aspects of the department. Upon his sudden death, a new department chair was selected and attempted to shift toward a more democratic and cooperative style of administration, but faced resistance from the faculty who were accustomed to Beaufort’s top-down leadership approach.
