Sheldon Caplis knew that this pledge was a philanthropic coup. UMBC’s original campaign strategy had assumed that only $1.8 million of the institution’s $50 million “stretch” goal would come from alumni. No one was more elated – and surprised – than Caplis when, in Fall 2000, an eight figure pledge was received from within the UMBC family. The largest financial commitment ever made to the university, the pledge had been secured from a thirty something couple: UMBC alumni entrepreneurs who had accrued considerable wealth in Maryland’s vibrant high tech economy. The gift would finance a new center for mobile wireless computing at UMBC and add to a growing complement of applied research centers and labs.
