Digital Books: Download Troubleshooting

We understand that the digital book download can be a bit confusing when you aren’t familiar with it. On this page, we hope to help troubleshoot some common problems with opening the file.

Download Limit

Each user is allowed 3 downloads, but unfortunately the system cannot differentiate between a successful and a failed download attempt. If you receive a message about running out of downloads but have not successfully opened the book yet, please reach out to our team at orders@pssc.com. We will review the reading history and can assist customers.

Please note that we are not able to extend the number of downloads in order to share the digital book among multiple users.

Software Needed

First, please check you have Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) installed. This is required in order to open the digital book. If you don’t have ADE, it is free to install and you can download it here. Instructions for installing it can be found here.

Once you confirm you have ADE on your device, please download the digital book file again using your download link in your email (it should have a file name like URLLink.acsm).

If you do have ADE installed, please make sure to open the file in ADE and not a different software.
(Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat are both incompatible with the book file). You should be able to right click the file (or press and hold on mobile) in order to select ADE as the program the file should open in.

Adobe Digital Editions: Ensuring the File Opens in ADE Every Time

In order to make ADE the default program for the digital book, you can follow these instructions:

  • First save the ACSM file on your desktop (or somewhere that you can find it):
  • Click your download link to download the .acsm file
  • Save the file to your desktop, or somewhere that you can find it

Now you have the acsm file saved in an accessible place you can go ahead with changing the file association. The steps to do this are different if you are on a PC or a Mac so please use the right instructions for you.

  • Associate the acsm file type with Digital Editions (Windows)
  • Navigate to where you saved the file. It will be named “URLLink.acsm” or something similar
  • Right-click on the file
  • Select properties
  • Under the “General” tab, near the top, it says, “Opens with…”
  • Click the “Change” button
  • If Adobe Digital Editions is shown as an option, click on it and then click “OK” and then “OK” again
    • If you can’t see Adobe Digital Editions listed as an option, click the little + (plus sign) adjacent to “Other programs”
    • Select “Adobe Digital Editions” and click “OK” and then “OK” again
    • If Adobe Digital Editions isn’t listed as an option under “other programs”
    • Click the “Browse” option
    • Navigate to c:\program files\adobe\adobe digital editions
    • Click on “digitaleditions.exe”
    • Click “OK” and “OK” again

Associate the acsm file type with Digital Editions (Mac)

  • Navigate to where you saved the file. It will be named “URLLink.acsm” or something similar.
  • Click on your file to select it.
  • Select “Get Info” from the File menu (or press Command-I) to open the Info window for that file.
  • Find the section named “Open with”.
  • Select “Adobe Digital Editions” in the menu or pick “Other…” and navigate to the application.
  • Click the “Change All…” button, read the prompt, and click “Continue.”

From now on when you click to open an .acsm file, the ebook open inside ADE.
